Previously called the Innovation in Geography Teaching Award, this award honours the memory of Canadian Geographic publisher and COO Gilles Gagnier, who passed away unexpectedly in 2021. The award recognizes an inspirational educator who is committed to advancing geographic literacy through innovative teaching and learning strategies.

Background

This award is given to a Canadian educator currently working in a K-12 classroom who sparks students’ desire to learn, investigate and explore geography in all its breadth and complexity.

Nominations must be received by June 30, 2026. 

Medal recipients will be announced in August, 2026, and will be invited to attend the annual Geographica Dinner held in November in Ottawa, Ont., to receive their award.
