Canadian Geographic Education strives to recognize teachers who are making a difference in and out of the classroom when it comes to teaching geography.

Alex Trebek Medal For Geographic Literacy

In acknowledgement of Alex Trebek’s support for The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, particularly its educational programs for Canadian youth, in 2019, the Society’s Geographic Literacy Award was renamed the Alex Trebek Medal for Geographic Literacy. This prestigious medal annually recognizes an educator who has made significant contributions to geographic literacy in Canada.

Gilles Gagnier Medal for Innovation in Geographic Education

The Gilles Gagnier Medal for Innovation in Geographic Education, presented annually, recognizes an inspirational educator who is committed to advancing geographic literacy through innovative teaching and learning strategies. This award is given to a Canadian educator currently working in a K-12 classroom who sparks students’ desire to learn, investigate and explore geography in all its breadth and complexity.

Research Grants

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society has designated funds for the purpose of making grants in support of research on geographical topics and in support of projects that further the mandate of the Society “to make Canada better known to Canadians and to the world.” Proposals must identify the topic to be addressed, the methods to be used, and the nature of the finished product.
